Company and stakeholder assets

We use our company assets and those of our stakeholders responsibly. Assets include raw materials, money, products, real estate, equipment, computers, mobile devices and data.

This means that we:

  • Protect our assets and those of our customers and stakeholders from damage, theft, loss and misuse
  • Refer to business unit policies before making personal use of company assets
  • Do not use company assets for personal gain, such as for a side business
  • Remove waste or surplus material only in accordance with our business unit’s policies

We have a lot of scrap material on our project. The site manager arranges collection regularly so that it doesn’t accumulate on the site. He gets paid in cash for this. The amounts are quite small and go into a fund that is used to pay for coffee or pizza for all our colleagues on site. Some of it is saved for extra treats at the Christmas party. Is it OK to deal with our scrap material in this way?

No, this is not acceptable even if the payments are used to benefit the whole team rather than specific individuals. Scrap materials should be disposed of through approved suppliers to ensure that we comply with environmental and other requirements. Never accept payments in cash. We require that all transactions are documented and properly reported.

At my worksite, some incorrectly sized wood was ordered. It cannot be used elsewhere on the project or returned, as it was our mistake. My manager asked me to dispose of it. Is it OK if I take it home, as I want to build some new planters for my garden?

You cannot take waste or surplus material for your own use unless it has been specifically approved in accordance with your business unit policy. It is important to properly dispose of all assets for environmental and accounting reasons and to avoid any perception of favoritism.

I want to take home some Skanska tools and equipment to work on a private job for my neighbor over the weekend. If I return the tools on Monday, is this OK?

No. The tools and equipment belong to Skanska, and any use, even on weekends or holidays, would not be allowed without advanced approval. Although these tools may not be in use at particular times, we need to consider other factors such as insurance and health and safety issues.
