Sustainable Future

Climate and environment

We are committed to our goal of transitioning to low-carbon construction across all our projects and ultimately achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2045 in our own operations and our value chain. We are also mindful that our industry affects the local environment, both where we operate and across our value chain. We work to reduce our environmental footprint and ensure a thoughtful use of materials.

This means that we:

  • Work actively to improve the climate and environmental performance of our operations, projects, products and services during their entire life cycle
  • Take environmental risks and opportunities into account when initiating or tendering for projects
  • Engage stakeholders in environmental management. These stakeholders include employees, customers, our supply chain and local communities
  • Carry out due diligence where relevant, to identify the environmental impacts of our business, both in our own operations and in our supply chain
  • Take care not to misrepresent efforts to reduce our environmental impact in external communications or marketing materials
Remember: All Skanska Group companies operate under environmental management systems registered and certified according to the international ISO 14001 standard. These systems must cover all activities in which Skanska has management control or a majority shareholding. In locations where we do not have management control, we aim to maintain comparable environmental management standards.

Just as I locked up the project site for the night, I noticed a pool of hydraulic fluid under one of the excavators. If it were during work hours, I would take care of it immediately. Is this something I can leave for the morning?

No. Our Code and environmental management system require that we handle these matters promptly. If you cannot make arrangements for immediate cleaning yourself, contact your project’s environmental manager or site manager to ensure the leak is addressed immediately.

A key material in a project’s specification has a very high carbon impact. The customer has set an ambitious carbon reduction target for the project. I have heard of an alternative material used on a similar Skanska project that, though more expensive, has a much lower carbon impact. What should I do?

Share the information about the alternative material with your manager and colleagues, and review its feasibility against the project’s overall cost plan and its carbon reduction target. Where appropriate, present the different options to the customer so that they can decide on the project’s material.
